Power to X – Why and When to Use Electricity to Make Gas Renewable

Serguei Netessine and Christian Kaps, Operations, Information and Decisions, The Wharton School

Abstract: With this proposal, we request research funding for the development of one paper studying the operational benefits of Power-to-X technologies to discern when shifting power systems to renewable oil and gas becomes optimal. If funded, this request would support the gathering of data from power system and technology firms as well as our modeling and simulations efforts to answer two main research questions: 1) Under which technology and operational circumstances does shifting gas/oil to sustainable Power-to-X technology become protable or socially desirable. 2) What potential does this technology have to replace electricity alternatives, such as e-mobility and energy storage.
