As technology evolves, startups and established companies are increasingly shifting from competition to collaboration to capture the value of emerging innovations. The Mack Institute’s report, When Goliath Needs David: How Corporations and Startups Are Redefining Corporate Venturing, explores this trend across industries and geographies, showing how incumbents and startups are forging new partnerships that benefit both sides.
Building on that research, Professor Sheryl Winston Smith of BI Norwegian Business School has developed the Corporate Venturing Dashboard. Drawing on SEC filings, the dashboard scores major corporations across 15 dimensions of venturing activity, from corporate venture capital funds and accelerators to the strategic objectives behind each initiative.
The current dashboard includes six companies: Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Cisco, Qualcomm, and Merck. Each company is scored, ranked, and benchmarked against its peers, making it easy to compare how leading firms approach corporate venturing and the strategies driving those efforts.
Sheryl Winston Smith is Associate Dean of Entrepreneurship and Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy at BI Norwegian Business School. Her research examines the intersection of entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy, with a focus on corporate venture activity, entrepreneurial financing, intellectual property, and firm performance. She has received support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and has held postdoctoral appointments at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Smith earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University and her B.S. from Yale University.
